The call has been made - the PTAS will not be running until further notice.

In a mutual decision made today, Newcastle’s notorious Anti-Slam cannot continue to run under its current format, at least for the time being.

With 8 months under our belt, the PTAS has become a well loved & hugely successful community-run initiative, & the decision is by no means final/permanent.

This is a callout for yr thoughts. All those involved in the PTAS, whether it be closely or no, we want to hear from you, we do we do we do. Either leave a comment on this site or email Di at diannersaur@gmail.com.

ROUNDS FIVE, FIVE POINT FIVE & SIX.

28th Feb saw ROUND FIVE of the PTAS go off with a raging success, 28th March saw a one-off relocation to the Lass O’Gowrie for a much more intimate (& over-18 only, sorry) anti-slamming experience. With twilight coming on sooner & sooner each day it began to feel as though the PTAS was curling into hibernation, but on the 25th April, despite ANZAC Day & numerous other double-triple-quadruple bookings we still managed to fill the ARThive & give the poetry a good slap on the wrists.

ROUND SIX

Thomas Keily, AKA Citizen Tom, AKA Tomas Jack of Hearts took out the prize for Personal Favourite (& I’m sure I’m not alone on this), freshly reunited with Newcastle after a wholesome 2-year stint in Istanbul with the Sufis. Other highlights included the wandering traveler Mitch AKA Charlie Brown who shared with us a snippet of his story, the entirely noisy celebration of ever camera-clad Adam‘s birthday & Carlin‘s surprise recital from the streets, witnessed only by the few who could find window space. Jenna AKA Casiogloria serenaded us with her unique brand of lo-fi often sea-related spoken word beat goodness, & Donny Dooley won the first prize of 1. a bulb of garlic & 2. lots of Listerine, in the secret category Best At Staying Off the Walls. We also made record highs in donations, which will surely go towards good good goodies for y’all. Your contribution keeps this thing going, thankyou.

We here at the Anti-Slam collective are excited about the next instalment in May, & we have a special announcement – the PTAS will be running as part of Crack Theatre Festival during This is Not Art 2010! We know it’s months away, but we’re already excited. Get the notebooks firing!

AW HECK WE ARE TOTALLY BACK.

ROUND THREE was a total roundhouse punch in the teeth, with two hours of NON STOP POETRY (that’s like 10,000 performers if you count right) & the first prize going to Bhenjamyn Phraser in the new, one-off category of ‘MOST EXPRESSIVE SHADOW PUPPETS’. We also had brilliant performances from notorious Sydney slammer Fez, local award-winning poet Sarah Taylor, a tear-jerkingly hilarious debut from Gunta (AKA Adrian Quinn) & ouch, so so much more. There are photos around. They will be collated sometime.

The next PENIS TOWER ANTI-SLAM is going to be held thusly:

In other news, we brought PENIS TOWER ANTI-SLAM to Canberra’s BAD!SLAM!NO!BISCUIT!, which is run on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. & what’s better, Alex Martin & his ‘Mum & Dad’ manifesto TOTALLY WON IT with like the best possible score you can ever score. So you will be seeing him at The National Folk Festival this Easter Sunday where he will continue to DESTROY THINGS.

All the more reason to COME PLAY POETRY/ANTI-POETRY GAMES WITH US.

WHEN: Sunday 22nd November

WHERE: ARThive Gallery, 1/111 Hunter St, Newcastle Mall

HOW: Sign-up & sit-down at 6 30pm sharp, slamming kicks off at 7pm!

HOW MUCH?: Free (donations encouraged – for upkeep of the anti-slam & ARThive)

WHAT: EVER. You’ve got a couple minutes to make us laugh/cry/vomit in whatever form you choose – tho we dissuade the use of props, music or costume, if you reckon it’s rockin’, bring it a-knockin’.

Some folk have expressed concern & confusion about what in the werld an ‘anti’ slam is. To put it simply, it was a reaction to the poetry slam movement in Manhattan sometime during the 80′s or 90′s or whenever. Reverend Jen Miller was not so chuffed by the competitive nature of other slams, & decided that everyone should be given a perfect 10 score. Here’s her take on it. This is kind of where we’re coming from. Except we (or someone chosen by us) WILL judge you. Just you won’t know what criteria we’re basing it on until the end.
